A Bellingham waterfront has been honored as one of the best beaches in the country.
The American Shore and Beach Preservation Association, based in Florida, recently named Waypoint Park on the waterfront at Bellingham one of the country's best-restored beaches. The association is an advocate for keeping coastlines healthy, and releases its list annually. Officials can use Logo Design to incorporate honors like this into official city documents.
The restored park and beach, which was an industrial site for many years, opened last year after a cleanup of the environment. In a press release about the beaches it chose this year, the association said Waypoint Park adds a natural element to the shoreline of Whatcom Waterway, which is starved for beaches. The association noted the waterway runs through Bellingham's heart, and the city has made a significant commitment to enhancing and improving the habitat along the edge of the estuary.
Waypoint Park covers two acres, and lies adjacent to the Granary Building, which has several new tenants and has been renovated, as well as the also-revitalized central pier. Waypoint Park gives members of the public access to the waterfront, which is difficult to find. The association was also pleased that the park has been made accessible to the disabled, as well as pedestrians and bicyclists.
There were only four beaches on the list this year. The others were Duval County, Florida; South Padre Island, Texas; and Caminada Headland, Louisiana.
