The Virginia Zoo in Norfolk plans to add a Nature Play area to their park. It will open in the summer. Nature Play is an area that uses plants, vegetation, and playground equipment to bring children to play outdoors.
This type of play area is known to help children develop cognitive skills, develop physical and social skills. Greg Bockheim, Executive Director of the Virginia Zoo, says they want to bring the outdoors to children and to teach them about the environment and sustainability.
The Nature Play area will be about one-acre in size and will be located in the zoo’s Flora Point. Nature Park will have tree stumps and pieces to develop coordination and climbing. It will also have walking paths, and equipment to develop jumping skills.
The area will have a sandbox, willow tunnel, and bamboo maze. The zoo received several grants that funded the new addition. These grants came from several local organizations and businesses. These organizations were Rotary District 7600, Norfolk Sunrise Rotary, Wells Fargo, Norfolk Rotary Charities Inc., Virginia Beach Rotary Foundation, and Target.
The New Nature Play area will be open for free play and programs by the zoo’s Education Department.
The City of Norfolk donated new bathrooms. They will not be installed until this spring. Norfolk has printing services that design Banners and provide banner printing for projects like this.
On May 4, the zoo will have a Family Volunteer Day. Volunteers can help work on areas of the Nature Play area. The zoo is located at 3500 Granby St.
