In a year when 16 of Virginia’s 22 Fortune 500 companies fell in ranking, Norfolk Southern, based in Norfolk, managed to hold steady at number 247.
Norfolk Southern is a transportation provider that operates more than 20,000 miles of transportation routes, servicing 22 states and the District of Columbia. Transportation is available to every major Eastern seaport, 10 river-based ports, and nine lake ports. The company also operates the East’s most extensive intermodal network.
The company works to create jobs and reduce greenhouse gases by investing in projects that expand the rail network, improve freight capacity, and increase efficiency. According to the company’s website, it strives to make green shipping a reality.
Overall, there are 22 Virginia businesses that made the Fortune 500 list; four companies improved their ranking on the list this year, and two were unchanged. Hilton Worldwide Holdings of McLean became a publicly held company in December, and was new on the list this year - a fact that can be added to its Stationery printing. The company owns, leases, manages, develops, and is involved in the franchising of resorts, timeshares, and hotel properties.
Also new to the list was Leidos Holdings, based in Reston, Virginia. Leidos was created last year, in the wake of the split of SAIC, a government and defense contractor, into Leidos, and a smaller company also called SAIC.Get a Free Quote for Stationery
