Family play on the way to Orem
Very soon, Orem locals will have a chance to see the play Mother Hicks, which is all about love, acceptance, and hope.
The family-friendly event was written for people of all ages by American playwright Suzan Zeder, who writes for families and young audiences.
The play takes place in and near a town called Ware, in Illinois during the 1935, when the Great Depression is still making life hard. The main character is a foundling named simply ‘Girl’, an orphan who sets out on a journey of self-discovery.
Along the way she meets a young deaf boy named Tuc and a grown woman going by the name Mother Hicks who has been cast out of the town as an accused witch. The trio band together, tackling problems as they arise and building a bond based on their differences from the people that live in the town. Parts of the show will be narrated both out loud and by an actor playing Tuc performing in sign language.
Those who plan to attend may want to have flyer printing done ahead of time to help advertise the show.
The play will be put on by students in the School of Arts, on Thursday, January 4, from 7:30 pm until 9:00 pm at the Noorda Youth Theater. The theater is located in the Gunther Technology building on Wolverine Way, on the campus of Utah Valley University. Ticket prices vary by seating and can be purchased online.
