A huge mixed-use development is planned in San Antonio's East Side, near the Alamodome.
The project will comprise 7.7 acres and include condos, restaurants, and perhaps even a microbrewery. Alan Warrick, councilman for District 2, where the project will be located, said the development is “going to be huge”.
He compared it to what San Antonio residents have seen taking place in the Pearl, a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood anchored by the former Pearl Brewery. Restaurants and shops are found throughout the Pearl, and the brewery, which is a Victorian structure dating back 120 years, is being transformed into a luxurious boutique hotel.
Local developer Efraim Varga is working on other projects in the area, and has submitted plans to develop a project at the corner of Cherry Street and Carolina Street, which is about four blocks from the Alamodome. The proposed project would renovate an entire block.
Varga requested and received a zoning change to allow for multi-family residential development, as well as a hotel, restaurants, a beer garden, a microbrewery, and office and retail spaces. In a phone interview, Varga said he preferred not to reveal details about the development until he has closed on the properties.
As the project gets underway, Varga could work with brochure printers on an illustrated booklet to provide to both residential and commercial realtors in the area.
