San Antonio explores mycology at home

San Antonio residents who have always wanted to try their hand at growing mushrooms at home may want to save space for an activity that will introduce the practice.

The Central Texas Mycological Society will be putting the “fun” into fungi when it offers its Mushroom Cultivation 101 class in mid-July. It will cover edible species with a culinary use and tickets are available for $25.

Attendees in the workshop will follow the syllabus of the group's new “Spore Corps” program. They will learn about the life cycle of mushrooms, and they will also be introduced to the species that tend to be a good fit for the first-time fungi grower. It will cover the entire process from sterile techniques to providing conditions that are conducive to fruiting. There will be slides shown and the facilitator will share their own stories of growing these unique organisms.

Learning new skills can be useful and entertaining, especially when it is done as part of a larger group of others who are also interested in the same topic. A flyer printing company can supply options for handouts and other learning materials.

The Central Texas Mycological Society will be providing this easy introduction to growing mushrooms for culinary use on Saturday, July 11. The San Antonio Botanical Garden will be the venue for the function.
