San Antonio riders rally on behalf of bike lanes

Bicycle enthusiasts came out in a group in San Antonio to say good-bye to a bike lane that will soon be rerouted.

According to a news item dated June 4th, that was the day approximately 40-50 riders got together to ride the bike lane on South Flores Street while they can still do so. They met at La Tuna Grill and rode southward down South Flores Street, then turned around and rode north, heading to San Antonio's downtown.

The ride was organized by Monica Walker and Jaime Santillan on the heels of a decision by the San Antonio City Council to shift the bike lane away from South Flores. San Antonio put almost $1 million into constructing the bike route just over a year ago, but last week voted to move it, at a cost of approximately $740,000. Less than two hours after the vote, the group took to the streets.

Some of the riders use the lane every day, while others came from other parts of the city to show their support for the lane. Mostly, the riders wanted to show drivers it's possible to share the road, and say good-bye to a favorite route.

San Antonio officials might work with a postcard printing company to create cards to mail to concerned citizens, explaining the decision and outlining the new route.
