San Antonio residents enjoyed Síclovía earlier this month. This was the tenth year for the biannual event, which ran from early morning until 3:00 pm.
During that time, streets in the downtown area were blocked off, and pedestrians with their dogs, bicyclists, and joggers got to play on the asphalt. The event is an outdoor exercise festival, and this year, the route was more than three miles long.
Participants started from Maverick Park and went down Broadway, then wound through locations like North Flores Street and César Chávez Boulevard before ending at Roosevelt Park.
Roberto Treviño city councilman for District 1 said the great thing about the day is participants get to see the city streets from an entirely new perspective.
Representatives from the YMCA, Spurs Sports, Entertainment, Humana, and the city council made opening remarks to a small crowd first thing in the morning. By the time the event kicked off, more than 65,000 had arrived to take part and play in the street. The YMCA said that the longer route, as well as the extended hours, enabled more people to take part.
Síclovía is open to the public, and free; the next is scheduled for September 25.
Event organizers could work with a postcard printing company on a mailer for city residents, asking them to save the September date and join the fun.
