San Antonio honors its artists

On Tuesday, October 11, five San Antonio artists were recognized at the Distinction in the Arts ceremony, held at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts.

The five were Jesse Treviño, Aaronetta Hamilton Pierce, María López De León, Tomas Ybarra-Frausto, and Jim Cullum.

Treviño is a muralist whose murals include ‘La Veladora of our Lady of Guadalupe’ at the Guadalupe Cultural Art Center, and ‘Spirit of Healing’ at the Children's Hospital of San Antonio.

Pierce is an arts advocate and civic leader who recently organized a celebration of Maya Angelou called ‘A Rainbow in Our Clouds’ at the Carver Community Cultural Center. She was also the first African-American woman on the Texas Commission on the Arts.

De León is recognized as a leader in the nonprofit arts field, and was appointed to the National Council on the Arts in 2013 by President Obama. She is CEO of the National Association of Latino Arts and Culture.

Ybarra-Frausto is a scholar and an expert on Latino and Latin American art. He is a supporter of ‘rascuache’, which he defines as “the idea of making do with what you have and using everything.”

Lastly, Cullum is a jazz musician known for the development of live music and nightlife on the River Walk. For decades, he performed with his band at The Landing, a nightclub his father started on the River Walk.
