Two construction projects have been finished on UTSA Boulevard in San Antonio, easing the congestion for drivers who use the roadway.
The boulevard was widened to a four-lane thoroughfare, with two lanes in each direction, between Babcock Road and Interstate 10. Other improvements included a center lane or median, bike lanes, sidewalks, turn lanes, and pedestrian paths. Drainage, Signs, and traffic signals were also upgraded.
Ron Nirenberg, the mayor of San Antoniobelieves the highway improvements are a good example of a great working partnership among the city, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), and Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (AAMPO). He points out that the construction has made more room for drivers, but has also included improvements that will improve the commute for bicyclists and pedestrians as well.
The stretch of highway between Ximenes Avenue and Interstate 10 was the responsibility of the Texas Department of Transportation, while San Antonio took responsibility for the stretch from Ximenes Avenue to Babcock Road.
UTSA Boulevard is an important route for many people, but particularly students at the University of Texas at San Antonio. The boulevard is in the district of Council Manny Pelaez, who says he hopes to bring more projects like this to the area, both to alleviate traffic and enhance residents' quality of life.
