San Antonio celebrates Armed Forces Day

May 16 was Armed Forces Day, and San Antonio celebrated with a downtown river parade.

The city hosted the event, which it dedicated to all the men and women who are serving, or have served, their country in uniform. The parade, which featured 26 floats, was one of the biggest ever to be held on the River Walk.

The parade began at 6:00 pm at the Arneson River Theater, an open-air theater built between 1939 and 1941. Interestingly, the stage is located on the north side of the San Antonio River, and the audience sits on the south side; the theater can hold 800.

Volunteers, many of whom came from American Legion Riders Post No. 2, in San Antonio, spent hours setting up equipment and chairs. The volunteers said they had come to help with the parade because they were veterans themselves, and wanted to honor other veterans, as well as those people currently in uniform.

Elias Acevedo, who is the director of the post, said it was a proud day, and he wanted to make sure members of the armed forces got the recognition they deserve.

Parade organizers might plan for next year by working with a flyer printing company on a mailer for residents. If they include photos of this year's event, they could help people plan for next year's celebration.
