Bad weather forced the third annual Houston Street Food event inside, but did not dampen attendees' spirits.
The director of the event, Cathy Siegel, moved the party from a blocked-off section of Houston Street into the One Alamo Center building, where it kept going.
The street fair is the creation of Houston Street Charities, of which Siegel is the executive director. The food fair is part of a larger event known as the San Antonio Cocktail Conference, also run by Houston Street Charities. This five-day event brings top mixologists and bartenders together with cocktail lovers for tastings, educational events, and cocktail parties. Stretching over five days, the Cocktail Conference donates all of its profits to children's charities.
Houston Street Food attendees are able to buy gourmet picnic baskets from chefs at Market on Houston, Citrus, Lüke, Bohanan's, and the Palm Restaurant. Among the dishes available were duck carnitas tortas and potato salad made with crawfish boil. More than 150 baskets were sold at $50 each, and guests were treated to wine and beer, and listened to live music. The proceeds from this event go to help the S.A. Food Bank’s Summer Food Service Program.
Event organizers could consider working with a flyer printing company on a mailer for residents, recapping this year's success, and asking them to save the date for next year.
