The DoSeum, the children's museum in San Antonio, has named Ricky Armendariz as its first artist in residence.
Armendariz paints on carved wooden panels, and his work is known as provocative and witty. A native of El Paso, Armendariz is a professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio, and also has pieces of his work at the University; the McNay Art Museum; and the San Antonio Museum of Art.
Elda Silva, the arts writer for the Express-News, believed Armendariz's style to be a combination of Greek mythology, indigenous stories, and Southwestern iconography, along with ‘Spanglish’ lyrics.
Armendariz plans to create an installation for the DoSeum that features an oversized bedroom tent for a child's room, and a magic forest that contains projects elements and interactive displays. Armendariz himself says his goal for his residency is to “highlight our strengths as individuals” and how those strengths can be a “powerful learning tool” for young children. He hopes to show children there is value to the fact that they are individuals.
The DoSeum offers exhibits that cannot be found in any other museums for children, including a musical staircase, an interactive robot by the name of Baxter, a Children's River, and lots of outdoor space that has water features including a river to wade in, and a tree house.
