Feast of Sharing attendees celebrate the holidays

Hosted just before Christmas, an event that began as a small celebration managed to include thousands of people.

The H-E-B Feast of Sharing, an annual event, is a way to help feed the needy as well as celebrating a sense of community. The dinner for San Antonio residents is now so large it is held at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. On December 20, the crowd topped 18,000.

H-E-B, a privately-held grocery company with stores in Texas and Northern Mexico, began the Feast of Sharing in 1989 in Laredo, to thank its customers for their patronage. From there, the day has grown to include 31 cities in Mexico and Texas, and feeds approximately a quarter-million people.

Leon Masson, who was paralyzed in a motorcycle crash, has been attending the dinners for five years, always bringing Delilah, his service dog. This year, Delilah was wearing reindeer antlers and sunglasses, and was happy to pose for photos. Masson says he comes to the dinner to make people laugh.

Paula Payne, a retired Air Force officer, said she came to meet people, while José Rodriguez said he enjoyed the fact that people from all economic groups and walks of life came together in fellowship.
