Concepts revealed for Yanaguana Garden at Hemisfair site

In 1968, San Antonio hosted a World's Fair known as Hemisfair, since it concentrated on the cultures of the Western Hemisphere. There have been many plans for the site since the fair closed, but none have been implemented. Now, according to a June 4th news item, plans are taking shape for a garden on part of the site.

The installation will be known as the Yanaguana Garden, and will be set on seven acres at the southwest corner of Hemisfair Park, which was the PlayEscape. Among the elements of the garden are a pergola that covers a walkway leading to the center of the space, where there's a sand area for children to play in.

The first phase of the development is scheduled to start in July, and should be finished by spring in 2015. The second phase will include the construction of a climbing structure to act as a pedestrian gateway for those who enter from Alamo Street. There will also be improvements to the garden included in this phase.

Yanaguana was the name of a Payaya Indian village in what is now San Antonio. It is believed that the word was also the Payaya name for the San Antonio River.

Garden developers could work with brochure printers to create a booklet for distribution at the site, explaining the history and including a map to the various areas of the garden.
