Gino, a guide dog from the Guide Dogs of Texas, recently took part in the city’s early Christmas celebrations, and learned some lessons as well.
When a 55-foot white fir from Northern California’s Shasta Mountains was brought to Alamo Plaza, Gino was there. Among other factors, it was hard for workers to get the tree upright and stable, so Gino had to be patient. The tree will be decorated in red and gold, and adorned with 10,000 lights.
April Medellin, from Guide Dogs of Texas, says their dogs are often in working environments, and have to exercise patience as they go with their people to doctor’s appointments, or accompany veterans to therapy sessions. This meant Gino’s ability to sit through the entire tree installation was an important milestone in his training.
Medellin said that as people in San Antonio begin to recognize Gino, they are also starting to understand how extensive training is for guide dogs. She added the exposure Gino’s getting has motivated people to become puppy raisers, while others have made donations.
Gino’s next test comes this Friday, November 25, as he will be at the tree-lighting ceremony kicking off at 6:30 pm. The fir is the center of the holiday kick off. Preceding the ceremony, there will be plenty of family friendly activities to enjoy.
