In order to shorten delivery times and make certain San Antonio residents have Sunday delivery, Amazon.com is opening what it calls a “sortation center” in the city.
The company will lease a warehouse comprising 193,265 square feet on the city’s west side, making it the first operations facility Amazon has in San Antonio. Packages from fulfillment centers in Schertz, and one set to open in San Marcos, will be sorted here.
Ashley Robinson, an Amazon spokeswoman, said the center will bring hundreds of jobs to San Antonio, but did not confirm when it would go into operation. According to Texas’ records, work on the renovation has already begun and should be finished in November.
Amazon’s “sortation centers” were established by the company last year, and are designed to allow Sunday deliveries, as well as cutting down delivery time in general. At present, Amazon has over 19 of them throughout the country, including facilities in Houston and Dallas.
Amazon has been increasing its presence in Texas recently. In August, the company announced that it planned to open a fulfillment center in San Marcos, which would be the fifth in Texas. Another fulfillment center is being built in Dallas, while in 2013, the company opened a facility in Schertz comprising 1.26 million square feet.
Amazon officials might work with a flyer printing company on a mailer for residents of the area, announcing the new center and the jobs that will come with it.
