Community members are now working with San Antonio and other agencies to improve both the crosswalk and the lighting at a city road.
People who live in the area of Culebra Road's 5500 block on San Antonio's west side are well aware of its shortcomings, with a number of both pedestrian and vehicular accidents occurring in the block.
Two apartment buildings lie on either side of Culebra at this point, and residents often cross the street here. Laquita Garcia is the leader of the community’s efforts to improve conditions, and has been talking with both CPS Energy and the city about the problems. San Antonio is responsible for funding measures dealing with public safety, and the energy company is required to comply with the city's decisions.
CPS recently replaced older streetlights in the area with new LED ones, at the city's behest. Garcia acknowledges the replacement is a good first step, but says the lights are not bright enough. She also wants more lights put in. CPS is conducting a study to see where on Culebra the lights should go.
The groups are also considering ways to make the crosswalk safer. The project is an ongoing effort among San Antonio, CPS, and residents.
Community members could create and use Presentation Folders to organize material to present to the city and EPS as the project continues.Get a Free Quote for Presentation Folders
