Texas school district requests school names from community

The Alvin Independent School District, which includes the community of Pearland among others south of Houston, recently received a $245m bond to build additional facilities.

It is now looking for names of the six new schools to be built and is accepting nominations from staff, students, and the members of the community that live in the school district. It may be looking to a flyer printing company to create Flyers and mailers that can be distributed in the area, letting people know of the need for these names.

According to policy of the district, a committee from the community will study the recommendations for school names. Names of facilities should be for people or places. If the name of a person is recommended, then that person should be prominent either locally or nationally in the fields of education, art, science, the military, or statesmanship. The individual may also have been an early pioneer in Texas or have been an outstanding President of the United States. Historical relevance is an additional criterion if the name of a place is to be considered.

The facilities to be built include two elementary schools, a new junior high school, a career and technical education center, and Alvin ISD Agricultural Center.

Nominations will be accepted until the end of today (January 27), after which time the recommendations will be reviewed by the naming committee for a final decision by the Board of Trustees shortly thereafter.
