Members of Keep Pearland Beautiful (KPB) got together at the Hilton Garden Inn for the group’s Annual Membership Dinner last month, and laid out plans to increase successful recycling in the area.
The dinner’s guest speaker was Charles Rivette, who is Waste Management Area Director of Planning and Project Development. Rivette’s message was that to make recycling a success, it must be “convenient, logical and reasonable”.
Rivette also drove home the importance of the “recycle often, recycle right” campaign. He elaborated by pointing out that although switching from 18-gallon recycling bins to single stream 96-gallon carts vastly increased recycling, the level of contamination soared as well.
A three-step program was outlined to get the public on board and promote effective recycling. Brochure printers provide one of the most effective means of reaching out to the public, provided that recycling of the printed materials is encouraged.
The first step involves encouraging Pearland residents to recycle all their cans, bottles and paper waste, then the emphasis moves to educating the public about avoiding contamination of items to be recycled. Liquids must be drained and food, as well as any materials contaminated by food, must be removed.
Step three is informing the public that plastic Bags do not belong in recycling carts, as they ruin materials that might otherwise be recycled and have the potential to damage equipment at recycling centers. Clean, dry plastic Bags belong in special recycling containers designated exclusively for them at retail stores.Get a Free Quote for Bags
