Pearland builds new roads to accommodate growth

Several road expansion projects are in progress in Pearland, designed to ease the phenomenal growth in population since the turn of the millennium.

According to Trent Epperson, the Assistant City Manager of the City of Pearland, the city has grown from 30,000 residents to about 113,000 since 2000, marking an increase of almost 300%. Such growth typically means a corresponding increase in traffic.

To ease such traffic congestion, there are several road expansions underway, one of which is the extension of Pearland Parkway, which is almost complete. Epperson said this should be opened within the next two to three months.

Another project is to add two lanes to Kirby Drive, which would double the number of lanes it now has. This is where the new Alvin Independent School District High School will be located and is currently under construction.

FM-518, also known as Broadway and running east and west through the middle of town, generates a great deal of traffic and alternate routes are being created. The plan is to widen these streets and other corridors in and around the Broadway area from two to four lanes. A long-term plan is to widen Broadway itself.

The city may work with a flyer printing company to create Flyers and materials with more information about these projects, with schedules and timelines that can be distributed to city residents.
