Local restaurateur dishes up BBQ at NY Wine & Food Festival

Pearland native Ronnie Killen, owner of Killen’s Steakhouse and Killen’s Barbecue, was one of a just a few out-of-town chefs chosen to take part in the recent Meatopia event.

The New York City Wine & Food Festival, a four-day event that culminates in Meatopia, is hosted by the Food Network & Cooking Channel. Meatopia, which took place on October 18 this year, is now in its eighth year. It was envisioned and created by Josh Ozersky, a James Beard Award-winning writer for Esquire who passed away in May of this year.

On an Easter Sunday visit to Killen’s Barbecue, Ozersky invited Ronnie Killen to participate in Meatopia 2015. Killen accepted unreservedly. Once in New York City, the Killen team provided residents of the Big Apple with a selection of its most popular menu items, including pecan smoked brisket points, burnt ends, and beef short ribs. Each of the selected Killen items was smoked overnight using post oak, after being rubbed with restaurant’s signature salt and pepper spice rub.

Informing this year’s 3,000 hungry attendees of the fare being offered at the 30 cooking stations is an example of when a flyer printing service can be used to add value to an event. Proceeds from the festival went to the New York City Food Bank and No Kid Hungry.
