Shobha Dasari of Pearland will be heading for the Scripps National Spelling Bee in a few weeks’ time.
Having won the Pearland competition for the last four years, the Junior High West student tied for first place on March 29 in the third largest local spelling contest in the U.S., the Houston PBS Spelling Bee. That qualifies her to participate in the national contest at the end of the month.
Shobha won an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington D.C. to compete in the National Bee by tying for first place against the best 55 spellers among 1,040 schools from 42 Texas counties. This will be Shobha's second trip to Washington to compete in spelling; she won a qualifying place last year as well. Her younger brother Shourav tied for third place in the same Houston bee.
The competition has been around since 1925, and winner receives a grand prize that is worth in excess of $40,000. When winners are announced, the successful student’s town and school district may notify Stationery printers to include the accomplishment in printed materials used for promotional purposes.
The National Spelling Bee will take place May 27-29. It is estimated that more than 11 million youngsters competed to make their way through the various levels of competition for the chance to compete in the Washington D.C. event.Get a Free Quote for Stationery
