McKinney recently hosted a musical gathering to pay tribute to veterans in the area who have special housing needs.
The Smiles Charity hosted the event, and thousands came out to enjoy the music. The host for the event, which took place 6595 Virginia Parkway, was Rodney Atkins.
There was no cost to attend the family friendly event, but money was raised for the not for profit group through the sale of raffle tickets, with a variety of prizes to be won that ranged from signed musical memorabilia to a diamond necklace and even a brand new Cadillac CTS. The funds that are collected will be used to help build homes for wounded veterans that have been adapted to meet the special needs that they may have to having served their country. The recipient this year will be Sgt. Michael Beeson, who retired after serving several years in the US Army. He was wounded while on deployment to Afghanistan.
Beeson’s home will be the tenth that has been constructed by the Smiles Charity, which was started 15 years ago by Dr. Jennifer Buchanan, who wanted to help do something that gave back to veterans in the local area.
