Residents of McKinney recently turned their clocks back due to daylight savings time, and the city’s fire department urged them to make another change as well.
People were reminded to change the batteries in their smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms. This date was chosen because it makes doing this easier to remember if it was tied to another significant event.
This reminder was tied in to a recommendation made by the National Fire Protection Association about the importance of making sure that these safety devices are in good working order. This helps to make sure that they will be awakened should a fire occur while they are sleeping and may not be aware of the presence of smoke or other warning Signs.
Some other ideas related to safety from the fire department included replacing smoke detectors that are ten years old or not in good working order, making sure alarms are on every floor of a dwelling, especially outside the areas when people sleep, having both photoelectric and ionization smoke alarms so that they can detect all types of fires, and making sure the devices are interconnected and cleaning them when the batteries are changed.
