Caf lends a hand up to special needs adults
A new café has opened in McKinney, and it offers something special to not only its customers, but to the staff who work there as well.
Hugs Café provides employment opportunities for 24 adults who have special needs, and pays them a competitive wage. The tasks are adapted so that they are suited to the individual who performs them, and they work along with rest of the staff to meet the needs of the lunch crowd. Custom drinkware such as coffee mugs printed with the establishment’s logo can be sold to customers to help promote it to the public.
Ruth Thompson, who is the owner of the establishment, noted that they work together as teammates, and she finds it to be a very rewarding experience. For her part, Joan Smiley remarked that her daughter, who works at the establishment, has found a new zest for life since she stated her employment there.
Smiley also pointed out that businesses like the café offer a chance to earn a living for adults with special needs as they age out of the school system.
Besides providing adults with developmental difficulties, brain injuries, or other special needs with a place to work, it lets the members of the public understand that the individuals are capable of performing tasks, perhaps encouraging other businesses to follow suit.
