Swallows are a type of bird known for their graceful flight, and North America’s largest species of these insect eaters will be the focus of a function on offer for Houston birders.
For the dates this summer, Houston Audubon will be welcoming ticket holders for its annual Purple Martin Watch Parties. There are dates planned for July and August, and they will take place at one of the city’s prominent roosting trees.
Houston is home to several purple martin roosts, with some accommodating up to 500,000 birds. After nesting, the adults and fledglings alike gather in large flocks each day to fill up on insects before their fall migration. At dusk, they return to their roosts, and this spectacle Forms the base for the watch parties.
This year's sessions have been sponsored by CenterPoint Energy, and there will be Audubon staff and volunteers on hand to share details about the birds. Everyone will learn how to lend them a helping hand so the event can be enjoyed for generations to come.
