Cultural festival celebrates independence

To celebrate Colombian Independence Day on July 20, the Colombian Fest International is taking place shortly before this date in Houston.

The popular event usually attracts about 25,000 visitors each year, and will likely be of particular interest to those of Colombian heritage who want to celebrate their culture and independence. It will no doubt also attract people who are simply interested in learning about the South American country's traditions, however.

There will be plenty of traditional Colombian foods and drinks available for purchase during the day, which may include ajiaco (chicken soup), bunuclos (fritters), and empanadas (baked stuffed pastries).

Vendors will be on hand to sell a variety of Colombian-related arts and crafts, including homemade jewelry, clothing, and works of art. There will also be two stages presenting a variety of Colombian performers, including Tito Nieves, Luis Felipe Gonzales, Junior Jein, Paula Zuleta, and Silvestre Dangond.

Organizers of the festival are still looking for volunteers to help with the smooth running of the festival, and there are plenty of opportunities for local businesses to sponsor the event. Houston printing companies often help advertise popular events like this by providing products such as Posters and Flyers.

The Colombian Fest International will take place at Sam Houston Park on July 12. Admission is $15 in advance and $20 at the gate. To get the latest information about his popular festival, call 281-954-4603.
