August is set to be a real scorcher in Houston, but a local event will provide an opportunity to both beat the heat and learn more about the value of native plants and the birds they attract.
Houston Botanic Gardens Birds and Blooms will see its attendees enjoy an evening of learning in air-conditioned comfort. It will be focused on how choosing particular species and cultivars for the home landscape can benefit wildlife. Tickets start at $8 each.
The gathering will introduce native species, including how they offer ease of care, disease resistance, and food and shelter for birds and other animals. Information will be provided about why this is so important, and to help everyone who takes part get started as soon as possible, they will be invited to pot up some new additions to their own plantings. Everyone is advised to bring their own camera and binoculars if possible.
Attending an introductory workshop can help those who are new to get started in a positive and supportive environment, and Copies of species checklists and basic ID guides can be prepared for this sort of activity by area Stationery printers.
Houston Botanic Garden has scheduled its Birds and Blooms walking workshop for Saturday, August 9. It will begin at 5:30 pm and wrap up at 7:00 pm.
