Houston takes on invasive plants

A Houston partnership that works to both protect Buffalo Bayou and encourage public interest in doing so has some special activities in store for the summer, one of which is designed to raise awareness of the impact of invasive species of plants.

The Partnership's Invasive Plant Eradication Unit will be rolling into Buffalo Bayou on several dates in spring and summer. The vehicle has been designed so that it raises public awareness, and each of its visits will last for two hours.

The vehicle will help to make environmental stewardship more accessible, and it will be parked at the Bayou’s Water Works. The public can drop by, speak to the facilitators, and learn how they can protect native species. There will also be a “hands-on” component, as the attendees will be invited to make seed bombs that they can plant in the park or on their own property.

Mobile units are used by communities, law enforcement, not-for-profit groups, and other agencies. The graphic design department at a local printing services company can prepare and install a vehicle wrap, and these provide a quick upgrade that will not damage a paint job.

The Invasive Plant Eradication Unit will be rolling in on Saturday, May 10, and again on June 5, July 12, and August 9. Each of its visits will run from 9:00 am until 11:00 am.
