Multi-length bike ride to raise autism awareness

The Austin Autism Bike Ride 2015 has been given an April date. Originating in 2008, it has evolved into a major event in the Georgetown, Texas region.

The ride starts and finishes at the Georgetown High School. The various routes include ones of 9, 24, 42, and 68 miles. The terrain is fairly flat with some rolling hills found along the way, particularly on the east side of Williamson County. For those preferring not to ride bikes, running or walking routes will also be available.

The 68-mile ride is in recognition of the fact that one in 68 children in the country has autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The 42-mile is in support of the statistic that one in 42 boys have been diagnosed with autism spectrum. Autism is five times more common in boys.

As autism can be diagnosed at 24 months of age, the 24-mile ride acknowledges this information. Lastly, the 9-mile route brings attention to the documentation of 9 out of 10 children with autism experience some form of bullying by other children in school.

Local Print companies are available to provide needed materials for the event. Banner printing will produce signage to place throughout the various routes to direct the riders and walkers.

The Austin Autism Bike Ride will be held April 19. Early registration is now open online with a $10 discount. After registration, the participant will receive a custom cycling jersey once they raise $500 for the cause. More information is found on the event website.
