Georgetown workshop to offer buzz on bees

Both native species and honeybees play an important role in the natural world, and a Georgetown activity will give the public the insider’s buzz on these industrious insects.

The William County Master Gardeners program has an assortment of learning activities on its agenda, and one coming up in February will be all about honeybees. Bee Supply’s Becky Barajas will be sharing her knowledge, and it may even spark an interest in backyard apiculture.

The assembled group will learn about the ecology of honeybees and how this can indicate the overall health of populations of wild species in the local area. They will find out why bees matter so much and what steps they can take to make them feel welcome in their own home garden. Details about collecting honey will be provided, and there will be tips shared for supporting this local cottage industry. Everyone will walk away with a better understanding of how to choose suitable food plants and provide water and shelter for bees, with questions welcomed.

Living an eco-friendly, sustainable life may include providing habitat for insects and other pollinators. Simple guides that include advice for making a garden bee friendly can be prepared by Stationery printers to hand out during a learning event.

The Honey Bees and Me meeting will be on Monday, February 10. It will begin at 6:45 pm at 100 Wilco Way.
