Even after they have taken off their boots and hung up their ruck for the final time, veterans may still shoulder a heavy load, but laughter and camaraderie can help to heal, and this is the inspiration behind a Georgetown event.
The Irreverent Warriors Silkies Hike will be for veterans, National Guard members, reservists, and active duty personnel. While civilians will not be permitted to join the activity, they can cheer the hikers on while they go, showing them that their neighbors stand behind them.
The registration system for the day is now open, and the hikers will go along at a moderate pace. Most Silkies event routes are between four and ten miles, and there will be stops along the way for food, water, and friendship. While everyone is welcome to wear a ruck, they do not have to do so. Documented service animals are welcome.
To help make sure that everyone who takes part is prepared, a list of what to bring and what to leave at home has been provided on the event listing. Awareness-raising walks often carry Banners or other signage to increase public awareness of the cause, and these can be prepared by local banner printing companies.
This activity will be hitting the road on September 9. It will depart from VF Post 8587 in Georgetown at 8:00 am.
