Georgetown to host Irreverent Silkies Hike

A Georgetown event will use humor to help veterans heal, even after they have retired.

The Irreverent Silkies Hike, which is named for the “silkies” undergarments worn by Marines, will be taking place in September, and it will depart from VFW Post 8587. All former military members are able to register, and activity duty, reservists, and National Guard members are also welcome.

Hikers will show their support for veterans’ mental health. Members of the general public are not able to be part of the hike, but are welcome to line the route and show the hikers their community stands behind them. Participants may wear their weighted ruck if they wish but this is not required. Trained service animals may be accommodated, but it has been requested that pets and emotional support animals be left at home.

While silkies are considered the “official” uniform for the activity, they are not mandatory. However, shirts must be worn at many of the establishments the group stops at.

An activity held in support of a cause may attract a lot of attention. A banner printing company can craft Signs and Banners for the participants to carry to help raise awareness.

Georgetown’s Irreverent Silkies Hike will hit the road on Saturday, September 21. Everyone who registers is asked to be at the staging area by its scheduled start time of 8:00 am.
