Georgetown prepares for homecoming of states oldest university

Southwestern University, the oldest such institution in Texas, is preparing to celebrate its 175th anniversary in Georgetown this fall with a three-day Homecoming.

The weekend will be filled with a parade, several sports competitions, and a party. The event will be open to everyone, but also features special events for current students and alumni.

The staff and a host of volunteers have been preparing for the event for the last year, which features over 50 distinct dinners, competitions, and social events. Sports highlights include the Pirate Golf Classic, the Jameson 5k and Fun Run, an Alumni Basketball game, and a Dodgeball Championship. Then there are fun family events such as the Homecoming Cup Treas-arrrrr Hunt and the Homecoming Picnic. There are also many events available for those who enjoy nightlife, like the Decades Parties, Alumni Reunion Parties, and the huge 175th Anniversary Party.

Some will be surprised to hear that, a football game, long the standard nucleus of a homecoming, is the only thing absent from the festivities. This was actually due to a scheduling challenge. The committee in charge of the planning of the event did not want it to conflict with Formula One race weekend, so they opted instead to schedule for a time when the team was at an away game.

Southwestern University’s homecoming weekend will be held this weekend, October 16 – 18, at its campus. Flyers and Posters with schedules can be found around town, or further information can be discovered on the university’s website.
