Georgetown area gets ready for Scottish games

People in the Georgetown region are donning their tartans and firing up their bagpipes for the 54th Annual Scottish Gathering and Highland Games. The three-day event features music, athletic competition, and traditional meals from Scotland.

The festivities begin with an opening ceremony in which representatives of the Clan Societies carry burning torches through the city, bringing them to a Welcome Social at the Central Texas Area Museum. Over the next two days, tents will be available that will have informational Brochures, Scottish food, clan genealogy, and some folk music.

A big part of the weekend will also be Scottish Heavy Athletic Competition, which is a test of skill involving traditional games such as the caber toss and the heavy hammer throw. Highland dancing, piping, and drumming competitions will also be a huge focus of the weekend. The best entertainers of the festival will perform in a lively concert called ‘The Tattoo’. Directly following the Tattoo is the Tartan Dinner, a classic banquet with many traditional dishes.

The 54th Annual Scottish Gathering and Highland Games will be held on November 13, 14, and 15 at the Pace Park Grounds in Salado, Texas. Tickets will cost $15 on Saturday and $10 on Sunday, with a separate ticket required for the Tartan Dinner. Anyone interested should check local Flyers or the website for more information.
