The personal finance website compared each state, as well as the District of Columbia, to find the average monthly energy bills and arrive at a ranking of the most expensive energy costs. The study showed the average monthly energy consumption cost for Dallas residents and other Texans is $379, which was 49th from the top, or in other words the third least expensive. In the No. 51 spot was the District of Columbia, where the monthly average was only $274. Next lowest was New Mexico with $373.
The most expensive state when it comes to energy cost turned out to be Wyoming at $844, followed by North Dakota at $645, and Alaska, Connecticut and Massachusetts with monthly averages of $613, $593, and $589 respectively.

In explaining differing energy costs among states, Carnegie Mellon University’s Economics and Public Policy Professor Karen Clay said:
"Energy costs reflect a combination of factors, including access to resources such as natural gas, coal, sun, and wind. The costs of moving and distributing energy, as well as state policies regarding energy efficiency and environmental impact, also contribute to varying energy costs among states."
The study used information gleaned from the U.S. Census Bureau, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Federal Highway Administration, as well as other sources.
