Elon Musk awards underground tunnel to Dallas complex

The University Hills Development has won a mile-long tunnel from Elon Musk that will connect it to the nearby DART station.

The Boring Company, owned by Musk, conducted a competition beginning in January that garnered 487 submissions from governments, companies and individuals as a means of demonstrating how tunnels have the potential to solve problems. The billion-dollar University Hills housing project was one of 16 finalists and one of three United States finalists along with Ravens Loop in Baltimore and NOLA Loop in New Orleans.

The Boring Company was founded by Musk in 2016 as a SpaceX subsidiary with an eye to improving tunnel boring speeds. It is now independent and is involved in creating tunnels for underground transportation with the objective of cutting back traffic and enabling swift point-to-point transportation.

University Hills is a Southern Dallas development by Hoque Global that will cover 280-acres and contain a centrally located town center and 580 homes.

Print shops provide multiple types of signage for construction sites and materials to keep people updated on plans. Prior to any tunneling, the company will perform its due diligence such as attending meetings with regulators, and elected officials, as well as community and business leaders. There will also be experimental borings and an evaluation of the impact on subsurface infrastructure and utilities.

Scheduling for the project including the groundbreaking have not been announced yet as the timetable will depend on the planning and permitting required between The Boring Company and the City of Dallas.
