Snakes come out to enjoy Dallas springtime

With the arrival of warmer temperatures, more and more snakes have been spotted around Dallas, according to an expert.

Dallas Zoo herpetologist Bradley Lawrence said that the scaly creatures have been drawn out by the rain and are looking for food. He reminds people who are planning to spend some time outdoors to make sure that they pay attention to their surroundings so that they don’t startle a snake, as frightening one could cause it to strike out in self defence.

Mr. Lawrence further went on to remind people not to reach into spaces they cannot see, and to be careful when walking so that they don’t surprise a one of these reptiles. The Texas Parks’ and Wildlife website points out that these creatures are very beneficial to the ecosystem, and so long as people are careful, they should be safe. Its advice to those who come across one is to freeze until it moves on. This way, it will not feel threatened or cornered, and is far less likely to strike. Poster printing can be used in situations like this to create materials that remind the public of how to coexist with these creatures in way that both people and them safe.

Alexis Fleisig, who is a local photographer used to spending a lot of time working outside, noted that it’s a good idea to avoid tall grass where he serpents may seek shelter, and wearing long pants can help to keep people’s legs protected.
