Cliff Couch, the organizer of the event said that preparations had been made before the start of the race to deal with inclement weather conditions. Medics were travelling around the course on bicycles, fifteen stations offering aid to runners and vehicles which could pick up competitors if the weather became too severe or runners became stranded.
A number of people huddled beneath umbrellas to stay dry, while others used cheaper ways to keep dry. Kimberly McCall who was running the half marathon for the first time bought a plastic rain coverall, while some used garbage Bags to cover themselves.
The rain made running conditions more difficult as Heidi Hamilton, an experienced runner discovered. Hamilton had to give up her intention of running the marathon and run the half marathon instead, as the rain made it much harder.
She said:
“I’m glad I switched to a shorter distance because it was rainy and the roads were kind of wet and it was hilly and windy, not the most fun running weather.”
