What's Happening in Dallas, TX…

Safe sleeping practices encouraged by free baby boxes

A partnership between the Baby Box Co., the Dallas Medical Center, and several other Texas institutions to distribute “baby boxes” was announced last week.

Based in Los Angeles and started by a couple of North Texas natives, baby boxes are intended to combat sudden infant deaths (SIDs) and educate new parents about the subject. Of the United States’ 3,700 SIDs deaths in 2015, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates about 900 could be credited to entrapment in a crib’s railing and soft bedding that results in accidental suffocation.

The Baby Box Co., founded in 2012, encourages parents to adopt safe sleeping practices such as putting babies to sleep on their backs on a firm surface with no loose bedding, and never allowing infants to sleep in a parent’s bed. The baby boxes are made from heavy-duty cardboard and contain a mattress certified save for infant sleep, as well as a fitted sheet and waterproof mattress cover.

Three states – Alabama, New Jersey, and Ohio – announced their participation in the baby box program earlier this year. The program seeks to incentivize mothers to get regular prenatal care. By taking an online course about safe sleeping practices for infants, parents can obtain a certificate for a free baby box containing diapers, nursing pads, and baby wipes.

The use of variable data printing may be an effective way to inform expectant parents of the program.
