Regional police academy design phase now underway
The end of decades of renting space to train new Dallas police officers is in sight with the recent design phase kick off for the new regional police academy.
Cadets, city and state officials came together recently at the Kathlyn Joy Gilliam Collegiate Academy to celebrate the first concrete step in the construction of a regional policy academy. Dallas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick explained:
The architectural firm of HKS Inc. has been chosen to oversee the academy’s design and “facility programming” as well as provide “construction administration services.”
Banner printing services are frequently brought in as means of identifying construction project for the benefit of the public.
The cost for the new police academy is projected to be $150 million of which the 2024 bond passed this May will provide $50 million, the Texas Legislature provided the city with $20 million and $10 million comes from the Communities Foundations of Texas.
Conveniently close to the Stemmons Freeway, the academy sits on five acres of the campus of the University of North Texas Dallas and is being built in cooperation with the school. The new police academy is anticipated to be finished by 2027. In addition to serving the Dallas Police Department the new facility will also be used by other regional departments.
