Dallas PD looking for $6.8m to update security

Mayor Mike Rawlings has promised that money would not stand in the way of beefing up Dallas police headquarters security, and recommendations are being compiled.

A wish list for upgrading security measures for Dallas’ police stations adds up to about $6.8 million. In a memo provided to City Council on July 31, Dallas City Manager Gonzalez explained that the estimated cost included all proposed changes and improvements. However, evaluations of headquarters and the city’s seven substations will continue until August 11, at which time he will present his formal list of recommendations.

Following an attack last month, protective glass is high on the department’s wish list. Specifically, the broken glass in the headquarters’ lobby needs to be replaced and a “ballistic window wall” added, as well bullet-proof glass for the currently open information desk and for the offices and lobbies of the police substations.

Other security improvements suggested include relocating X-ray, metal detectors, and other machines to the lobby and updates to electronic building access, cameras, and fire alarms. The city manager’s office will likely soon be swamped with company representatives handing out digital Business Cards, seeking those contracts.

Following hearings over the next few weeks, the council will make its final determination on what improvements will be included in the next fiscal year’s budget, which starts on October 1.
