Co-op launched to provide members with lower solar energy prices

A group of business owners and residents, sharing a common interest in solar energy, have formed the Dallas County Solar Co-op with the intent to find and share information about getting the best deal on solar panels and their installation.

A nonprofit, Solar United Neighbors (SUN), is launching the Dallas County Solar Co-op in conjunction with Green Careers Dallas and 350 Dallas. In line with their objective of building a new U.S. energy system, SUN strives to educate residents about the advantage of solar energy.

According to SUN of Texas program director Hanna Mitchell, the goal is to reduce the start-up cost of solar energy and make it easier for businesses and households to access. Members are under no obligation to buy panels and all homeowners living in Dallas County are eligible to join for free.

Once large enough to carry some clout, the co-op will solicit bids from solar installers throughout the area. In addition to the cost savings of dealing as a group and using a single installation company solar panels can be bought at the installer’s group rate.

As groups grow, eventually the cost and time spent sending letters and Brochures to members may be handled more efficiently by Print shops.

Interested parties can learn more next Tuesday, January 7 at the Texas New Era Center at 6:30 pm, or on Thursday, January 9, at the Anita Martinez Recreation Center at 6:30 pm.
