Christmas tree lighting goes full speed ahead

On the evening of December 2, Newy Scruggs and David Finfrock of NBC 5 were on hand to help illuminate the Texas Motor Speedway (TMS) tree and celebrate another successful year for the Speedway Children’s Charities.

In the tradition of demonstrating that everything is bigger in Texas, the Speedway acquired what it calls the Metroplex’s biggest living Christmas tree. The tree, which arrived from Montana almost two weeks ago, is 61-feet tall, has 10,000 LED lights, and is topped with a 4x4’ star featuring the TMS logo.

The tree lighting shared the event with windup of the 2014 Speedway Children’s Charities (SCC) drive and the distribution of grants. SCC assists nonprofits in their mission to help North Texas children.

This year, $300,000 in grants were given out at the tree lighting with the largest amount, the founder’s grant in the amount of $150,000, going to the Tarrant Area Food Bank. The food bank intends to use the money to purchase a refrigerated truck.

Grants of $4,400 each were given to Children’s Health in Dallas, the Medical City Children’s Hospital in Collin County, and Cook Children’s in Fort Worth. Other recipients included organizations in Fort Worth, Lewisville, and Plano.

SCC has distributed $9.7m since being created in 1997. Charities are often dependent on the services of printing companies to promote fund raisers.
