University prepares bid to manage Los Alamos Lab

Management of the Los Alamos National Laboratory is up for grabs, and the University of Texas is one of several education and business institutions interested in the job.

The Los Alamos National Laboratory is where the first atomic bomb was developed and built and it is still among the top nuclear research facilities in the county. In the last few years, the lab has experienced a string of safety issues that involved the handling radioactive waste and plutonium.

Additionally, in late 2015, an announcement was made that the Los Alamos National Security LLC would not have its contract renewed due to its poor performance reviews. The current management contract, which is worth several billions of dollars, expires in 2018.

The University of Texas’ regents have allotted funds to create a bid for the contract. Although preparing the bid may cost the University up to $4.5m, the payoff, should the bid to run the New Mexico facility be successful, would be enormous and benefit the Dallas branch of the university, as well as all of its other campuses.

Bechtel National Inc. and the University of California are both partners to the outgoing management company Los Alamos National Security and have each shown interest in bidding for the management contract. Once the bids have all been finalized and Presentation Folders chosen, all that will remain is to await a decision.
