The pilot program where Uber, Lyft and newcomer Alto were given designated zones for pick-up and drop-off has been extended through October 2020.
Inaugurated in April of this year, the designated zones were implemented on a trial basis to ease congestion as well as address other public safety concerns related to the ride-sharing industry. After being in operation for six months, the Deep Ellum Foundation in partnership with the three ride-sharing companies and the city of Dallas have judged the program a success.
Pick-up and drop-off zones are located a block or two from Deep Ellum’s core of activity to improve the area’s emergency vehicle access and traffic flow. The restrictions are only in play on weekends and the busiest nights. Signage erected by the city identifies the zones for pick up and drop off as well as the area designated for rideshare driver staging. Additionally, the Deep Ellum Foundation provided ancillary A-frame Signs.
Any situation that may affect customers reaching a business often prompts the engagement of a flyer printing service by local businesses.
Two noteworthy changes were implemented in July, during the pilot program: Hours were switched to 9 pm Thursday through Sunday 3 am from the original 24-7 and the Pryor Street Zone was enlarged to include a Commerce Street drop off and pick up location.
Over the next year, a promise to take into consideration more zone adjustments as needed, signage, and infrastructure improvements.
