Track upgrade at Texas Motor Speedway underway

A multimillion–dollar upgrade has begun at the Texas Motor Speedway featuring not only a repave but also a restyling of its 1.5-mile track.

The Speedway’s President and CEO, Eddie Gossage, said the past 15 seasons had taken their toll and that from a competitive standpoint these improvements will make a big change for the Speedway. Work on the oval track, located about 40 miles from downtown Dallas, is expected to be finished in March.

Scheduled for April 7 -9, the NASCAR doubleheader, the O’Reilly Auto Parts 500, will give the new track its first use. Gossage was quoted in the Dallas Business Journal as saying:

"Once it's paved, we'll have about five weeks until the first race and in that time Goodyear has to test tires and bring in tires that will work for all three cars on that asphalt."

Among the planned upgrades is an extended drainage system that will help handle the weather delays that have sometimes plagued the Speedway. Additionally, the new asphalt will have racing rubber meshed in, which mimics older asphalt, giving the track the slicker surface preferred in racing.
