Texan mascot gets a new look

When the Texas State Fair takes place this year in Dallas, fair-goers will once again be greeted by the iconic Big Tex.

However, Tex will be sporting a different look for 2014. At the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on August 26th, the fair’s mascot’s new clothes were laid out on the field for display.

The 55-foot-tall cowboy usually only gets new duds every three years and, after a fire destroyed the original Tex in 2012, the new one wasn’t due for new threads until 2016. However, it was decided that Big Tex’s attire needed to be more ‘Texified’. A news release said:

"As a symbol of Texas pride, it only makes sense that Big Tex's clothing reflects his true Texas colors.”

Tex’s new look will include a blue denim pants and a navy blue shirt with shoulder to mid chest bright red chevrons and red cuffs. A white lone star adorns each chevron. Last year, the giant cowboy sported a white shirt. The outfit is completed by a belt buckle and his usual 95-gallon hat.

Anyone interested in viewing Tex in his new clothes can do so starting September 19 when he resumes his post at the entrance to the fairgrounds. Fair goers can either snap their own picture or, since fair officials doubtlessly engaged a postcard printing service to immortalize Big Tex, buy one.

The fair runs from September 26 through October 19.
