A six-month pilot program has been launched in Deep Ellum that requires all ridesharing services be restricted to pickup and drop-off zones in the Dallas neighborhood.
On April 18, a plan to ease congestion in Deep Ellum was launched. The traffic snarls are primarily on the weekends around closing time for the district’s bars. The problem is that traffic backs up as vehicles from ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft stop for their customers.
The traffic backups are primarily on Main and Elm Streets. On a Saturday night, it can take as long as 25 minutes to travel two or three blocks, meaning police, firefighters, and other emergency services could be delayed.
Five pickup and drop-off zones have been established and are to be used at all times, not just weekend nights. Following a one-month grace period, violating rideshare drivers will be ticketed.
Some patrons of Deep Ellum establishments are less than thrilled with having to walk to and from the zones at night. To allay fears, the Deep Ellum Foundation has said officers wearing uniforms will monitor around the zones to increase safety.
Many business owners are proactive and turn to brochure or flyer printing to help customers navigate obstacles like detours or restrictions, such as the rideshare zones that may dissuade customers from patronizing them.
Deep Ellum is the first Texas neighborhood to establish rideshare zones. Depending on how well the pilot program goes, it may be adopted permanently.
